You take the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. Recently taken over by Louis Roederer, makers of Cristal, the Château de Pez is the oldest domain in Saint-Estephe and an off-the-beaten-path Bordeaux sitting just north of Pauillac — a 5-minute drive from Lafite Rothschild, and basically across the street from the house of Calon-Segur — that's an up-and-coming still relatively unsung by even adventurous wine lovers. Wine Enthusiast rated the 2011 vintage 95 points, calling it, "Firm and closed, [with] intense tannins [and] the fruit following slowly behind. The structure is impressive, while the black-currant flavors still to show." A special, lighter and slightly more acidic red made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, it's definitely one to watch — and cellar.
