Cocktail Juice 101: So Fresh & So Green, Green

Your beloved green juice isn't just your nutritionist's favorite way to start the day: it can be a fun way to end it, too. Make every craft cocktail infinitely more interesting, layered, and why yes even healthier, by learning the basics of making fresh pressed and squeezed juices like the pros. Mimosas for brunch? Make your own orange juice even blood orange juice to kick it up a notch. Margaritas for Cinco de Mayo? Scratch-make a pitcher of watermelon agua fresca. Even just squeezing your own lemon or lime juice will take your cocktail game from junior varsity to D-1 with little to no extra effort.

Basic instructions:

Squeezing a pitcher of fresh lime juice or lemon juice is as easy as rolling the fruit on the counter, slicing in half, and pressing each half (cut side down) through a bar juicer into a small cocktail pitcher, picking out any errant seeds. A blender and strainer or juice machine can easily handle huge pitchers of more exciting, layered juices -- just start with fruit, then vegetables, then herbs or roots (like fresh cilantro, ginger, or turmeric), and taste as you go for the best results.

Blood Orange Elderflower Gin Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz of Gin
  • 3/4 oz St. Germain (elderflower liqueur)
  • 1/2 oz lime juice
  • 2 1/2 oz ginger ale
  • 1 oz blood orange juice

 Directions: 

  • In a serving glass, combine gin, St. Germain, lime juice, and ginger ale. Top glass with ice. Slowly pour in blood orange juice. Garnish with blood orange slices and fresh lemon thyme sprigs, if desired.Then serve immediately.
